SAFETY AT HOME WITH MEMORY LOSS

Providing safety for a loved one with memory loss can cover a wide variety of areas. This list will serve as a good start.

*Remove throw rugs, and clutter in walkways including electrical cords to prevent falls..

*Add night lights and encourage proper footwear.

*Use a lockbox for medications and dispose of outdated items.

*Remove matches, candles, lighters and install smoke detectors.

*Secure cleaning products, nonedible liquids and décor that resemble food.

*Remove or disconnect heat generating devices.

*Secure access to car keys or disable the car.

*Keep the medication list and advanced directives up to date and accessible.

*Take care of yourself! Eat well, stay active, find support and plan to occasionally get away.

*Add Homecare, Day Care, and/or help from Family and Friends.

*Plan your next step when conditions decline.

*Visit Communities ahead of the need and give yourself grace daily.

Every situation will be different but start with the basics and someday you will be sharing your own tips on how to keep a loved one safe with Memory Loss.
