TERESA’S JOURNEY

A Nurse Who Thought She Knew

Teresa Youngstrom is a seasoned Registered Nurse with more than 40 years of clinical and leadership experience. She had worked in hospitals, long-term care, home care, and even courtroom settings. She understood disease, medication, and patient behaviour at a level most people never reach.

So when her own mother began showing signs of Dementia, Teresa felt confident she could handle it. She had the training, the background, the knowledge. Or so she thought.

01

The Moment That Changed Everything

Despite all her experience, Teresa was asked to leave her mother's home. Her mother — living with Dementia — no longer wanted her there. Teresa left in tears. She was devastated, confused, and humbled in a way her clinical training had never prepared her for.

But that moment became a turning point. Instead of walking away from the pain, Teresa walked toward it — determined to understand what had gone wrong and how she could truly support someone on the Dementia journey, not just manage them from the outside.

02

Building Something Better

Teresa became a PAC Certified Independent Trainer under Teepa Snow — one of the leading dementia care educators in the world. She earned her certification through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. She began speaking, training staff, consulting families, and sharing everything she had learned.

She founded A Better Approach to Memory Care — a consultancy built on the belief that kindness, compassion, and the right tools can transform the caregiving experience for everyone involved.

03

Taking It to the World

Teresa launched Memory Care with Teresa Youngstrom — a podcast series now spanning three seasons plus dedicated episodes for Interviews, Education, and Encouraging Stories. She serves families all over the United States and beyond, offering personal consultations, staff training, keynote presentations, and CEU events.

Her message is always the same: meet your loved one where they are, not where you think they should be. That simple shift in perspective changes everything.

A Family's Gratitude

A LETTER

This letter came from Molly — a client Teresa supported through 2½ years of her mother's dementia journey. It captures why Teresa does what she does.

Hi Teresa — I wanted to let you know that my Mom passed away peacefully last Tuesday. Sarah and I were at her side and I'm so grateful for that.

I wanted to reach out to you one last time to thank you for the kindness and words of wisdom you shared with us over the last 2½ years. I am so appreciative that you were always available when we had questions or hit a wall — especially during Covid.

I realize Mom is at peace and now I have to get used to a new normal — not going to see her every day or think about what she might want or need. It will take time for sure, and knowing Mom is no longer in pain makes it a little easier.

Thank you again for EVERYTHING! I will continue to pray that your amazing work helps a lot more people. I feel very strongly that every Memory Care Unit would benefit a great deal from your many words of wisdom!
